Sitting on an elevation of 3,668 feet above sea level in the central part of the Texas Panhandle is the steadily growing yet still fairly little city of Amarillo, TX. With a current population of around 201,000, the town has seen and continues to experience rapid growth in both population and area. Over the last few decades, the city has slowly expanded south toward Canyon, TX, and westward toward the unincorporated community of Bushland, TX.
Amarillo started out of a small section of land in the panhandle that was a popular trading center. In 1887, J.I. Berry wanted to establish a town near that bustling market, so the seat of Potter County was created, and the site was named Onedia, later changed to the current and beloved name of Amarillo after the wheat fields and yellow wildflowers.
The main school district, Amarillo Independent School District (AMAISD), serves an area of 70 square miles. Apart from AMAISD, there are several other districts in the area that cover land within the city. Bushland Independent School District, Canyon Independent School District, Highland Park School District, and River Road Independent School District all cater to residents in or around the city of Amarillo.
